Company Info: “Holbrook” is a pickleball company that specializes in paddles for all skill ranges. They also offer a wide variety of products from both men’s and women’s apparel, to accessories, and other court products like balls and grip tape. They are a family ran business based out of Utah and have been around since 2021. More on them here: www.holbrookpickleball.com.
Paddle Name: The paddle we are reviewing today is the 16mm Mav Pro, which falls under their “Pro” series collection.
Description: The paddle features a simple, yet striking design. The paddle face is primarily black, with the Holbrook logo and name in white at the bottom. The paddle also features the USA Pickleball approval as well on the base of the paddle face. The grip is also black, with white stitching, which gives it a nice accent. The grip is ridged, similar to that of a Joola grip.
The paddle itself features an all-white edge guard. The edge guard is strictly white and does not feature any name or logo. Personally, I think there could be an opportunity here for some additional branding, but that is my personal preference.
The Holbrook logo is featured on the handle cap as well.
Play feel: The paddle is very comfortable when handling and is lightweight when playing. I do think the grip feels really high quality. Depending on your preference, you could add an overgrip, but I think this is actually one of the better “stock” grips on a paddle.
The paddle surface is a braided carbon fiber. I was really surprised at how much texture the paddle face had (in a good way). It did allow for me to be able to put a lot of spin on the ball. This paddle is the 16mm version and I also thought the control / touch were at a very high level and very consistent. The sweet spot is rather large on this as well.
Given that this is the 16mm version, I think it does lack a little bit of power, but they also offer a 13mm version, depending on your play style. I would consider this particular model (the 16mm) an “all around” paddle if you will. It held up great in extended dinking rally’s and it was really easy to get used to playing with it.
After playing with this paddle for a number of weeks, it has held up great and is showing very little signs of wear.
Price Point: The paddle is available on their website for $179.99.
Recommendation: I tested this paddle for multiple weeks, with extended playtime each day. As stated previously, it has held up great and has shown very little sign of wear and tear. It’s a really high quality paddle and I think you could utilize this to compete at a very competitive level. Given the price point, I do wish the paddle came with a paddle cover for the additional protection though.
A great thing about Holbrook is that they offer paddles for different skill levels. They’ve got the following options: Sport, Performance, and Pro series. The Sport series is offered at a lower price point and you could work your way up to the Pro series eventually, as your skills developed or as you wanted to upgrade your paddles. It’s nice to be able to have the different options all within one company.
The Mav Pro is definitely a paddle that would be great for highly competitive play. It’s durable and also, can hang with some of the most recognized brands in the market. Definitely keep them on your radar as you look for your next paddle!
